Conventions Essay
Codes and Conventions
Essay

This Katy Perry video also includes close-up to create more emphasis on the lyrics on the song, which makes the viewer pay more attention.

Mid shots are also used to help promote the artist, these
mid shots make it clear to the audience of who the artist is and also their
style of clothing as viewers use the artists as role models, they will copy
their style, the mid shots help promote these. Also, in this video bright
colours are used which is a more specific convention of bright colours to a
certain genre of music video.
Tilts, pans and tracking are used to trace the artist,
especially if the artist is in a performance video, there would be a lot of
movement involved in the video therefore the camera would need to follow the
artist, the pans and tilts ‘trace’ the artist.
For the mise-en-scene, props that are involved in the video
are used to add to the scene or to create significance, if a prop is involved,
this would be a vital piece of information in the music video. The colour of
the whole video, whether it is black and white or bright colours or dark
colours, sets the mood of the music video, for example dark colours are used
for more rock songs rather than something such as classical. The artists
costume plays a big part in the music video, because the viewer watch the music
videos of the artist they like, whatever they are wearing in the music video,
they will be influenced on how to dress by their role models which is the
artist in the music videos.
When creating a music video, there are a lot of ways that
you can create it. A performance music video can be created; this is where the
artist puts on a performance such as a dance to entertain his/her audience.
There is also a narrative, this is where the words of the song that have song
sort of meaning to the artist or viewer are acted out in some way in the music
video. Cameo; this is where the artist features in the narrative but is not
part of the story lie. There is also an animation; this is where animation is
added to the music video such as cartoon characters of pictures which creates an
entertainment music video for the viewer.
With editing, jump cuts are the most popular. These are used
most of the time in music videos because it is an easy and quick way for the
video to ‘keep up’ with the music, if the music is fast paced, then the music
video will need to have very short scenes, with lots of jump cuts. There isn’t
very much to sound in a music video, the sound is either the vocal of the
artist singing in the video, of the song placed as a track over the video.
For each genre of music video, there are different
conventions. The song I have chosen to use in my music video is a Pop music
video. The conventions for this are slightly different go general conventions.
In Pop videos bright colours are usually used as well as flashing lights in the
video, creative settings and backgrounds are also used to make the video look
different and unusual. These colours of the mise-en-scene are more appealing to
the younger audience that would be the more likely audience to be watching
these music videos, they express themselves through pop music, and pop music’s
target audience is aimed at younger people rather than the older generation.

The type of costumes that people in pop music videos are
innocent, this is so that they are not giving the wrong impression to the
younger audience. The artist wants to set a good example for the younger
audience because they look up at the artist as role models.
All music video have codes and conventions such as close up,
but a lot of the different genres of music video have a lot more specific
conventions such as bright colours for pop videos.

Skill Development Essay
Skill
Develop Evaluation Essay
In my foundation portfolio, I created my college magazine
front cover, while doing this, I didn’t know much about using Photoshop or
putting images together to make magazines. On my foundation portfolio, I
completed a college magazine for my college; I took pictures outside of class
around the college to promote the college in this magazine. I then created my
magazine through Photoshop, developing my skills in Photoshop. I then completed
my music magazine; this task was much bigger than the college magazine task so
therefore I had to spend more of the year doing my music magazine. I also
created this in Photoshop as well as the double page spread and the contents
page that went with the music magazine front cover.

Photoshop effectively. With these skills I learned I was able to change the lightness and darkness of the images, I was able to make the writing look better on the front of the cover, I was able to do a lot more things that I wouldn’t have been able to do before I started the AS Media course.
In my foundation portfolio, I was able to use my skills that
I had learned producing my college magazine as a preliminary project, on my
music magazine. For example, compared to my college magazine front cover, I was
able to make the music magazine look a lot for effective such as making text
stand out and manipulation the images to make the magazine look more appealing
to read. Also, because my skills had developed a lot since my preliminary task,
I was able to complete this with a lot less problems. For example, I was able
to add more of the features that I wanted to onto my music magazine front cover
because I knew how to work Photoshop a more effectively. My college magazine
design is a lot more basic then my music magazine. It had basic text on the
front and I did not manipulate the images on the front cover at all. Compared
to my music magazine front cover, I have made the text stand
out by putting back
ground onto the text; I have also added shadow to the text which also allows
the text to stand out. I manipulated the
images on the front of the cover which makes the image look more natural and
what people would expect to be ‘perfect’ on the front of a magazine.

In conclusion, before I started my foundation portfolio I didn’t
know anything about how to manipulate images, add text etc. and most of all I didn’t
know anything about using Photoshop, when I started my preliminary task of
creating the college magazine, this allowed me to learn all about using
Photoshop and then when it came to actually creating my music magazine, I was
able to make this without as many problems as the preliminary task, although I came
across some difficulties, I was able to solve them easily because I know what
to do on Photoshop. Now I am able to do a lot of things that I wasn’t able to
do, and I can create and manipulate things easily and effectively.

Influential Media Texts
These three influential media texts, I am going to use them to conduct feedback interviews with my audience to gather their opinions;
This is Cher Lloyds song 'Want U Back', there is two different videos of this song one is the US version, and the other is the UK version.
UK Version
This is Cher Lloyds song 'Want U Back', there is two different videos of this song one is the US version, and the other is the UK version.
UK Version
US Version
This song has two different music video because this has to appeal to two different audiences. The UK video has to appeal to the UK culture, this music video was brought out first This was released in February 2012. The US video has to appeal to a different culture with different views and they don't necessarily want to see the same things in music videos. The US music video was released in May 2012.
In the UK, the song features a rapper which was on the America version of The X Factor, he features in this video because he want to make it big over here in England, he did not features in the American version of the song because he was already well known in the United States.
Which music video do you prefer?
Do you think there is a huge difference between the two videos?
Do you like the overall style of the artist in these video?
